How to tie mcfly foam egg flies
Materials Needed
Before we begin to tie up our fly, lets have a look at what you will need to tie one.
Hook - size 8-14 egg/emerger style hook of your preference. I will be using a size 10 mustad signature series egg hook
Thread - Any color to match or enhance the material color. I am using a basic medium strength red thread but have also used kevlar to increase fly durability. Red in egg patterns seems to help trigger strikes by adding accenting to the egg color.
Body - Mcfly Foam egg material. You can also use glo bug yarn but will find you have to use more pieces to get the same amount as one piece of fly foam. You can find a wide variety of both fly foam and glo yarn. Some of my favorite colors include flame, pink, yellow, orange, egg, cheese, chartreuse and green.
How to tie
1. Start your thread on the hook and build a base of thread before ending right around the middle of the hook.
2. Cut a piece of fly foam about 1.5" long.
3. Secure the yarn to the top of the hook by making a loose wrap around the yarn then 2-3 tight wraps to cinch it down and flare the yarn. Then make a wrap in front of the yarn and behind the yarn towards the eye while pulling the ends upward before wrapping to the eye and whip finishing.
4. Pulling the ends of the yarn straight up, make a cut parallel to the hook shank to make the egg the desired size. I usually do 1/4 to 3/8". You can then use your fingers to work the materials around the hook shank to create an egg shape. Thats it, you have made a egg yarn fly.
