How to tie a sucker spawn fly
Materials needed
Okay before we get tying, lets have a look at the materials needed to make the sucker spawn fly.
Hook - size 10-16 nymph hook. I will be using a size 14 mustad signature series nymph hook. If you want to make a slightly bigger fly for dirty water, you could use a 2x long shank nymph hook as well.
Thread - Any basic medium strength fly tying thread will do. I like to use red for my sucker spawn to enhance the look.
Tail - Crystal flash. You could probably also use flashabou if you have that instead.
Body - Angora yarn. Most comes in 3 ply yard.
1. Start the thread on the hook and build a thread base on the shank. Tie in 4-6 strands of crystal flash about 3/4 the length of the hook shank for a tail.
2. Cut about 4-5" of angora yarn and separate the strands like shown in the picture.
3. Tie in the 3 strands of angora to the top of the hook and wrap back to the bend of the shank. You may want to clamp the strands at the end with your hackle pliers to keep them under control when you make your loops in the next step.
4. Lift up the yarn and place your bodkin across the hook shank then lay the yarn strands over the bodkin. Wrap 3-4 strong wraps of thread around the yarn to create a loop. You can lift the bodkin to adjust the size of the loop. After the thread wraps, be sure to lift the yarn straight up to pull the yarn strands to the top of the hook shank. Make sure you are still holding the bodkin under the loop while lifting to keep from pulling your loop out though.
4. The first loop made should be the smallest. The loops should get a little bigger with each made. You should be able to fit 4-5 loops on shank before you get close to the eye. Be sure not to make too many and crowd the hook eye with materials. Whip finish the fly and you are done.
